Updated Shot of All-New 2012 CR-V

2012 Honda CR-V concept
This updated image that has been circulating online in the past couple of weeks has been confirmed by Honda to be the new 2012 CR-V.  The production model will likely have slight differnces such as the smoked headlamp covers, glossy lower fascia cladding and oversize wheels.  Compared to the previous generation, the concept model takes on a more aggressive stance with deeper sculpting of the body lines and a bolder front fascia. The lower front bumper wraps smartly upward to convey SUV capability, while the overall lower front bumper design now integrates more smoothly into the fascia for improved aerodynamics.

It is scheduled to debut at the Orange County International Auto Show next month and should be hitting dealer showrooms before the end of the year.

10 Honda Manufacturing Plants in North America Achieve Zero Landfill Waste

Honda Achieved Zero-Waste-to-Landfill at 10 North America PlantsFrom a press release from Honda, 10 of the 14 Honda manufacturing plants in North America sent no waste to landfills, while the remaining four achieved a "virtually zero" level.  This undertaking has saved 4.4 billion pounds of waste sent to landfills and, while a major initiative for Honda, was achieved with help of Honda associates waste reduction ideas and implementation.

Honda Achieved Zero-Waste-to-Landfill at 10 North America Plants
Examples of Honda associates' waste reduction initiatives include:
  • Engine plants in Ohio, Alabama and Canada are reusing virtually all leftover sand from aluminum and ferrous metal casting operations. In FY2010, the three plants recycled a total of 9,400 tons of sand, which is used as mulch and landscaping material, and in concrete products.
  • No steel scrap from North American manufacturing operations has been going to landfills. In one example of Honda's effort to reduce steel scrap, in FY2009, the Marysville Auto Plant initiated a program to reduce the amount of offal by reducing the size of steel sheets used to stamp new body parts. The program, which significantly reduces the environmental impact of transporting and recycling the steel, is now being adopted by other Honda factories in North America including the Canada, Indiana and East Liberty, Ohio, auto plants, and is being considered by other Honda plants around the world.
  • In FY2008, Honda Power Equipment in Swepsonville, N.C., initiated a closed-loop system for recycling aluminum scrap from the machining trimming process, melting the scrap into ingots that are recycled into die-cast operations.
  • The East Liberty, Ohio, auto plant built a recycling bin for bolts, other unused fasteners and parts packaging, enabling the factory to recycle more than 22 tons of steel each year

Honda Won't Leave You Flat

Other Manfacturers are Cutting Spare Tires in a Cost Cutting Measure

A flat tire repair kit is seen inside the trunk of a 2011 Hyundai Elantra at STI Fleet Services in Torrance. Automakers save money and boost gas mileage by selling cars without an extra tire.
The trunk of the 2011 Elantra shows a tire inflation kit
where a spare would typically be found.
According to a recent article in the LA Times, a number of manufacturers are not including spare tires with their new vehicles, instead opting to include tire inflation kits.  The decision is based on an effort to increase fuel economy, trim weight and reduce overall costs.  Vehicles without a spare include the new Hyundai Elantra, Chevy Malibu and Cruze, as well as upcoming versions of the Kia Optima and Buick Regal.  These inflation kits are a temporary fix and are really only effective for a simple puncture in the tread of the tire, not a hole in the sidewall.  Honda still includes a spare tire with their vehicles.

Honda is Top Performing Non-Luxury Brand in Annual J.D. Power Quality Survey

Comes in 2nd Place Overall, and Leads All Brands With 7 Segment Winners.

J.D. Power and Associates released the results of their 2011 Initial Quality Survey today and Honda's performance was stellar.

From the J.D. Power website:

Each year, tens of thousands of new-vehicle owners respond to J.D. Power and Associates surveys to provide feedback on quality during the first 90 days of new-vehicle ownership. Consumers are asked to rate both mechanical quality and design quality.

Study results are tabulated using a “problems per 100 vehicles (PP100)” metric, where a lower PP100 indicates higher initial quality. Awards are given to the top-performing model in each segment with the lowest PP100, as well as for the assembly plant that produces the vehicles with the fewest number of problems.

Honda's PP100 number was 86 (the industry average was 107) and overall seven Honda models took home the top spot in this year's ranking:
  • 2011 Honda Fit (Subcompact)
  • 2011 Honda Civic and 2011 Honda Insight (Tie - Compact)
  • 2011 Honda Accord (Midsize)
  • 2011 Honda Element (Compact Crossover SUV)
  • 2011 Honda Crosstour (Midsize Crossover SUV)
  • 2011 Honda Ridgeline (Midsize Pickup)

Spy Shots - 5 Door Civic Hatchback Spotted

Images were captured of the 5-door Civic hatchback camoflauged with black tape.  The images and story were posted to autoblog.com.  See below for the story and links to the images.

From the autoblog.com story:

Honda debuted its 2012 Civic at this year's New York Auto Show, bringing the full suite of models to the Big Apple. But what about a five-door hatch? It's not quite ready, and not exactly confirmed for consumption the United States.

This Honda Civic five-door hatchback is wearing a hefty dose of camouflage, but black tape can't hide everything. No word yet on when we can expect the compact cruiser to ditch the camo, but we assume it won't be too far along, considering the rest of the American Civic family is already out in full unmasked force.

2012 Honda CR-V Spy Shots Revelaed

According to Car and Driver online, a reader has submitted photos of the 2012 Honda CR-V, slated to be released some time this fall.  Click here for the full article.  From  C&D:

A fearless Car and Driver reader in Washington, D.C., snapped this picture of the next-generation Honda CR-V crossover, which will debut this fall. The vehicle looks ready for production, wearing its own sheetmetal (rather than the modified body of an existing Honda model) with the badge buried in tape on the tailgate.
Like other Japanese auto companies, Honda is as tight-lipped as can be about its future products. We’re left to use recent history and this photo to determine that the next CR-V will represent a gentle update to the current car, rather than a radical redo.
Figure on a naturally aspirated four-cylinder being the only engine available. It should displace 2.4 liters like today’s CR-V engine, and we expect it to make between 180 and 200 hp—although the number may be closer to the bottom end of that range. Fuel economy also should improve slightly; in front-drive spec, the current model is rated for 21 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. (All-wheel-drivers are rated for 21/27.)
If there are any major changes to the upcoming CR-V, it could be in the seating layout. Until now, every CR-V has been a strictly five-seat affair. Given the long rear overhang of the car in this photo, however, it looks like there just might be room for a small third row of seats for short-legged passengers. Toyota sells a three-row RAV4, but most others in the segment serve a maximum of five.
Few would call the CR-V in its present form a pulse-raising vehicle, but it’s a staple for Honda, offers good driving dynamics, and is a sensible choice for more than 200,000 Americans per year. Even without concrete details on the next-generation CR-V, we feel confident saying it will maintain the current car’s sales success. We expect the 2012 CR-V to debut at the Los Angeles auto show this November.

10 Tips to Help You Save Gas

As gas prices continue to soar, everyone is looking for ways to minimize trips to the pump.  One easy thing to do is get behind the wheel of a fuel-effecient Honda, with 10 models that get over 25 MPG!  Here are some more ideas from Kiplinger's Kip Tips:

With gasoline prices at $3.84 per gallon, on average, and likely to hit $4 by summer (see our outlook), you're probably feeling the pain at the pump. However, there are ways to keep gas costs under control. Chris Faulkner, CEO of Texas-based Breitling Oil and Gas Co., offers these ten tips:

1. Download a gas app to find cheaper prices. You can use your smart phone to comparison shop for the lowest gas prices in your zip code with a free app such as GasBuddy. If you don't have a smart phone, visit GasBuddy.com or gasprices.mapquest.com before you leave home or the office to check gas prices online.
2. Don't buy gas near the highway. People like convenience, but gas stations near the highway charge 10 cents to 15 cents a gallon more, Faulkner says. Drive a little farther from the interchange to find a better deal (this is where the GasBuddy app is handy). If you're traveling, gas up in a rural town rather than a large city because prices will be lower.
3. Use a discount gift card. Discount gift card sites, such as Plastic Jungle and Gift Card Granny, sell cards at less than face value for gas stations, such as BP and Shell. They go quickly, though, so sign up for e-mail alerts to be notified when they're in stock. Also look for discounted gift cards for Walmart or grocery stores that have gas stations.
4. Keep car windows closed on the highway because open windows add drag and reduce your car's gas mileage by as much as 10%. In stop-and-go traffic, lower your windows to reduce air-conditioning use, which will drain your gas tank.
5. Develop good driving habits. You can improve a vehicle's gas mileage by up to 5% by avoiding quick starts and stops. Gas mileage also decreases as you accelerate beyond 55 mph.
6. Don't carry unnecessary items in your car. Every 200 pounds to 250 pounds lowers your car's fuel efficiency by 1 mile per gallon.
7. Keep your tires properly inflated. Faulkner says he tested this with his mother's car. She added 7% to her gas mileage by keeping her tires properly inflated.
8. Fill 'er up with regular. Most cars don't need the premium-grade gasoline, which cost 24 cents a gallon more, on average, than regular grade gas the week of April 18, according to the Energy Information Administration.
9. Combine errands with other driving you're going to do so you aren't making multiple trips and using more gas.
10. Don't overfill your tank. If you top off, you're just wasting money on the gas that inevitably sloshes out of the tank.

Two models offer 40+ mpg

Featuring the widest array of engine choices available in its class, the 2012 Civic is designed to even better meet the diverse needs of the compact-vehicle buyer when it launches this spring. The entire redesigned ninth-generation Civic lineup will become more fuel efficient with two models – the all-new Civic HF and the Civic Hybrid – each delivering fuel economy estimates of more than 40 mpg on the highway.
Built on the tradition of Honda fuel efficiency, the economical Civic HF model will be the most fuel-efficient gasoline-only powered Civic in the lineup when it launches this spring. Equipped with a 1.8-liter i-VTEC engine, the Civic HF is targeted to earn EPA-estimated fuel economy1 of 41 mpg on the highway. The 2012 Civic Hybrid, which will be outfitted for the first time with a lithium-ion battery and a larger 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine, is expected to achieve an EPA-estimated city/highway combined fuel economy1 of 45 mpg, an improvement of 4 mpg compared to the current Civic Hybrid. Both the Civic HF and Civic Hybrid models will be equipped with aerodynamic components for improved efficiency and Honda ECO Assist™ technology, an innovation that can enhance efficient vehicle operation while providing feedback to promote more efficient individual driving styles.

"The Civic is the only model in the industry that can deliver on all fronts – fuel economy, sporty performance, smart packaging, alternative fuel and long-term value," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda Motor Co.,Inc. "For the ninth-generation Civic, we are emphasizing improved fuel economy across the board, from the hybrid sedan to the sporty Si model."

In addition to the Civic HF and Civic Hybrid models, the Civic Sedan, Civic Coupe and Civic GX Natural Gas models are also estimated to achieve improved fuel economy compared to the current models. The Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe achieve an EPA-estimated fuel economy2 of 39 mpg on the highway, an improvement of 3 mpg when compared to the current model. The Civic Natural Gas vehicle is anticipated to earn a 7 percent improvement in fuel economy compared to the current model. The Civic Sedan, Civic Coupe and Civic Natural Gas models will all be equipped with the Honda ECO Assist technology.
Along with improved fuel economy, the new Civic lineup also delivers more performance, particularly with the Civic Si. The Civic Si sedan and coupe models will be equipped with a larger, more powerful 2.4-liter engine as well as a new 6-speed manual transmission. The new engine is anticipated to deliver 200 horsepower with 170 ft-lb of torque. Even with the larger engine and a 22 percent increase in torque, Civic Si is targeted to achieve an EPA-estimated highway fuel economy1 of 31 mpg; an increase of 2 mpg when compared to the current model.

The 2012 Civic lineup includes a sedan and a coupe with conventional gasoline models, a new "HF" high fuel economy version, two sporty "Si" performance versions, along with one hybrid and a natural gas alternative-fuel variant.

Haven't We All Dreamed That Hot Wheels Would Really Do This?

When we played with Hot Wheels as kids, wasn't it great to imagine that someday we'd really be able to do loop-de-loops and jump canyons?  Well, Hot Wheels is teasing us just a little bit more with a recent outdoor campaign.  Dare to dream...

From http://www.autoblog.com/ -

Diecast cars are a fun distraction regardless of your age, in fact, we've got a few on our desk at this very moment. Hot Wheels may be the king of scale-car fun, but its marketing department likes to think big.

Recently, we saw how it turned a historic Australian building into a 3D racetrack. Now it's apparently focused itscreative attention on Bogota, Columbia. Going low-tech this time, Hot Wheels has placed a giant 'loop' in the middle of an overpass.

It's certainly more eye-catching than a traditional billboard, and it still gets the message across that Hot Wheels are all about fun.

April Fool's Joke or is a Convertible Crosstour Coming?

According to a post on http://www.autoblog.com/ Honda is considering a CUV by making the Crosstour available as a Cabriolet.  It could be a perfect vehicle for Orlando motoring.

From Autoblog:

Are unconventional droptops becoming the darling of the automotive industry? Honda is evidently paying close attention to the new Murano CrossCabriolet from Nissan, and apparently it likes what it sees. Historically averse to convertibles (small-volume jobs like the S2000 excluded), the Japanese automaker now plans to offer a soft-top CUV of its own, and the unlikely choice for a roofectomy is the slow-selling Honda Accord Crosstour.

Unimaginatively dubbed the Accord Crosstour Cabriolet, this convertible features a two-plus-two interior seating arrangement and unlimited headroom. Under the hood sits the familiar 3.5-liter V6 engine, which produces 271 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. Like the fixed-roof Crosstour, the Cabriolet will be offered with front- and all-wheel drive, giving it more configurablility than the AWD-only Murano. Like the Nissan, the cabrio conversion has resulted in two fewer doors and the merciful exclusion of a basket-handle structural support. Oddly, to our eyes, the Crosstour Cabriolet almost looks more attractive than the hunchbacked hardtop – at least with the top down.

When it goes on sale this summer, the Honda Accord Crosstour Cabriolet will sit atop the Crosstour's pricing structure. The fully-loaded Crosstour we reviewed in 2010 had a sticker price of $36,930, so expect the convertible to come in right at a stitch over the $40K mark.

Did you know that in 2010, Honda produced 9 models in the U.S. for a total of almost 900,000 units.  Of those, 6 of them contain at least 70% of U.S/Canadian produced parts.

According to the April 2011 issue of Car and Driver:

Contrary to popular belief, America still builds cars—a lot of them. Nearly 8 million cars and trucks came out of  U.S. plants last year. Step back and look at the entire North American continent, and production adds up to more than 12 million units. But even if a vehicle is made by an American company by American workers, it’s not necessarily an American car, at least according to our government. By Uncle Sam’s reckoning, if  75 percent (by value) or more of a car’s parts come from the U.S. or Canada, it’s considered a domestic product; less than that, and it’s not. The maps here tell you not only where your North American–made car is built, but just how American it really is.

2011 Honda Odyssey Named IIHS Top Safety Pick

Press Release From http://www.iihs.org/

Honda minivan and 3 large GM SUV models earn 2011 Top Safety Pick award

After earning the top rating of good for roof strength, the Honda Odyssey minivan, and 3 large GM SUVs (GMC Acadia, Chevrolet Traverse, and Buick Enclave) become the latest 2011 Top Safety Pick winners. The Odyssey is the second minivan to earn Top Safety Pick since the Institute tightened the criteria to include good performance for roof strength in rollover crashes. These vehicles earlier earned good ratings for front, side, and rear crash protection.

In the latest tests, the roof of the Odyssey withstood a force more than 5 times the minivan's weight. By comparison, the current federal standard is 1.5 times weight. In addition to good crash test ratings in all 4 Institute tests, award winners must have electronic stability control (ESC), an important crash-avoidance feature.

Our Thoughts Are With Our Friends in Japan After the Deadly Tsunami

From Automotive News

TOKYO -- Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co., Nissan Motor Co. and Subaru suspended production at plants in Japan today and were assessing damage after an 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast, triggering a tsunami and shaking buildings as far away as Tokyo.

Honda shut down two assembly plants immediately after the temblor, spokesman Keitaro Yamamoto said. Honda's Suzuka plant in central Japan soon resumed production.  But the company's Sayama plant, north of Tokyo and closer to the epicenter, remained closed late Friday evening. Yamamoto said Honda headquarters was having difficulty contacting its plants. The Sayama plant makes several U.S.-bound models.  It sends the Fit small car, Accord sedan and the CR-V crossover to the United States, as well as the Acura RL and Acura TSX, Yamamoto said.

The company was unsure when production would resume. But Honda would close its r&d center and the Sayama and Suzuka factories at least through Monday, Yamamoto said.  At Honda's r&d center in Tochigi prefecture, one person died and 30 were injured when the quake toppled a wall at the center's cafeteria. No other injuries were reported.

Automobile Magazine Ranks the Top 6 Most Fuel Effecient Vehicles on Sale Today & 3 of Them Are Hondas

From: http://rumors.automobilemagazine.com/

With gas prices starting to climb back up to the $4 per gallon mark, we want to help you get ready so that it doesn’t hurt quite as much at the pump. Here are the 11 most fuel efficient cars within their classes on sale today; we’ve sorted them by the classes the Environmental Protection Agency uses to rate them for your handy convenience.

Most Efficient Two-Seater: 2011 Honda CR-Z, 35/39 city/highway mpg
While the CR-Z may not have been the sales success Honda had hoped for, it is still an efficient little hatchback. Opting for the continuously variable automatic transmission is what sets the hybrid two-seater at the top of its class. Even if the 109-horsepower, 1.5-liter inline-four cylinder and 13-horsepower electric motor is coupled with the six-speed manual transmission, it still returns 31/37 mpg city/highway. The slippery, wedge-shape and hatchback design both recall the mid-90s CRX coupe and means that the coefficient of drag is only 0.28 while still allowing for a capacious cargo area.

Most Efficient Compact: 2011 Honda Civic Hybrid and 2011 Honda Insight (tie), 40/43 city/highway mpg
There is no surprise that Honda’s compact hybrid duo make this list, especially given that their CR-Z cousin made the list too. Both the Civic Hybrid sedan and Insight hatchback are propelled by a combination of a 1.3-liter inline-four teamed up with an electric motor drawing from a pack of nickel-metal hydride batteries. The Civic puts down slightly more power at a total of 130 horsepower, versus the 98 horsepower of the Insight; both rout power through a continuously variable automatic transmission. Choosing between the two comes down to bodystyle preference and price; the Civic Hybrid starts at $24,700 and the Insight starts at $18,950 (including destination).

NSX Coming Back as a Honda Model?

According to Autoblog.com, the NSX may be making its way back to the streets, but as a Honda not an Acura.

Heads up, Hondaphiles – it looks like the NSX has been dug out of storage and plopped back on the table as a candidate for production. Company president Takashi Ito has announced that he's jump-starting development on the supercar. As you may recall, the beast was unceremoniously put to bed after the global economy gutted itself back in 2008. At the time, the project sailed under the HSV-010 moniker, and Honda even went so far as to campaign a version of the machine in the Japanese Super GT series.

Since then, the supercar segment has all but exploded with new metal. Mercedes-Benz jumped into the action with its SLS AMG, Lexus came to the party with the high-tech LFA and old-timers like the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and Nissan GT-R have been enjoying their own slice of supercar territory. We're all for the notion of a resurrected Honda fighter, but we're still going to treat this one with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Consumer Reports Ranks Honda at Top of List For Annual Ranking of Top Automakers for 2011

Consumer Reports’ annual ranking of the best automakers for 2011 once again found Honda and Subaru at the top of the list, based on judgments about reliability and resale value, among other qualities.

The Consumer Reports annual Automakers Report Card reflects the performance, comfort, utility, and reliability of more than 270 vehicles that Consumer Reports recently tested. Each automaker's overall score is based on a composite of road-test and predicted-reliability scores for all of its tested models. The road tests score is based on more than 50 tests and evaluations, covering performance, safety, fuel economy, comfort, and convenience. Reliability scores come from Consumer Reports Annual Auto Survey, which included histories of 1.3 million vehicles.
Honda, including its Acura division, has had the best reliability record of any manufacturer and has made mostly good to outstanding vehicles. In fact, no Honda product scores less than average in reliability. Currently, Consumer Reports Recommends 76 percent of the Honda vehicles it has tested. But some new Hondas have been unimpressive, including the CR-Z and Insight hybrids, which didn't score well enough in CR's tests to be Recommended. The redesigned Odyssey, still CR's top-ranked minivan, dropped a few points in its test score, compared with the previous year.
The Honda Fit was rated the top value small car and the best overall value of all models; in fact no Honda model was ranked below average in any category. The Toyota Prius was selected as the best value family car and the top green car. The carmaker’s RAV 4 was named best small SUV and the Sienna was judged the best “Family Hauler.” Hyundai’s Elantra won for best small car.
